Suicide Narratives
‘Suicide Narratives and the wise person: A person contemplating ending their life is a wise person who has a knowing of their story and can heal. Experiencing healing of self when sharing in companionship can be an empowering reality for the individual and the whole community’
(Ball & Ritchie, 2020)
Suicide Narratives is an individualised approach to therapy that takes the view that a person contemplating ending their own life has a narrative of how they have arrived at the reality of suicide. The approach acknowledges that the origins of suicidal experience are not in ‘mental illness’ but rather in social and emotional wounds; adverse environments related to trauma, racism, cultural unsafety, spiritual crisis, poverty, isolation, problems in relationship, or any difficulties that cause ongoing distress.
Suicide is a common human experience. When a person is able to talk openly about suicide, meaning can be discovered that leads to a sense of healing. Psychotherapy at Humane Clinic provides the consistency of human connection to break down the taboos associated with talking about suicide and working towards life affirming possibilities.
